Letters to God

Leave it at the Feet of the Lord
By Daniela Delvescovo

Movie Review of
Letters to God
Director: David Nixon; Cast: Bailee Madison, Tanner Maguire, Robyn Lively

"How does it feel to be on a mission for God?"
~ Pastor Andy

Letters to God (available on DVD) is truly a masterpiece. This film about a young terminal cancer patient really speaks to the soul, showing how one little boy can make a difference with his faith.

This film is great for all ages! It is a true family film with no mature or violent content. Every parent should rent this movie and share it with their loved ones!

Tyler Doherty (played by Tanner Maguire) is 8 years old and has terminal brain cancer. Making matters worse, his father died when he was young, and the children at school make fun of him.

However, this isn’t his real concern. All he wants is to see his mom laugh again. So, he writes his wishes, worries, and hopes in letters that he addresses to God.

The new mail carrier, Brady McDaniels (played by Michael Bolten), is at a hard place in his life. He is losing his son in a custody battle and is having problems with alcohol abuse. When he gets a new postage route, he is puzzled when he finds Tyler's letters to God among his normal mail pickup. He asks his supervisor what to do with the letters, and he responds by saying it was "up to him".

Brady brings the letters to a church, leaving them at a pew and trying to sneak away. However, at the last second the pastor of the church catches sight of him. Brady explains to the pastor about Tyler's letters and says he had wanted to bring them somewhere where they would be answered.

The pastor responds by saying that God put Tyler's letters in his hands for a reason and that there was something he was meant to do with them. He tells Brady not to worry, because Tyler had left his worries at the feet of the Lord.

This film has a string of Christian themes spread throughout, yet the one that really struck me was this: leaving all your worries at the feet of the Lord.

Throughout the entire movie, Tyler is never discouraged, never loses his happiness, because he believes that God has his back. He prayed and wrote letters to him even when things where looking bleak. Tyler wasn't even afraid to die, because he was certain he would go to heaven. He trusted God with everything.

Sometimes we are so anxious about things that we want to always be in full control. However, we cannot be in control; that's God's job. He has a plan for us all, and if we just trust in prayer, like Tyler, everything will be as it should be.

"Hope, pray, don't worry"
- Padre Pio

Yes, life can be distracting, and there are times when our problems seem to be consuming us: but there is no need to distress! Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed I say, "Lord, Make me an instrument of your peace; work through me"; after saying this, I can always find some good in my day. So do not fret; leave all your worries at the feet of the Lord!

Questions for youth groups, families, and other small group discussions (please feel free to post comments below):

  1. What is the biggest worry in your life right now?
  2. What is keeping you from leaving that worry in the Lord's hands?
  3. Why is it important to leave our worries at the Lords feet?
